Councillor Pound, who was elected to Ludlow Town Council in 2000, said in his letter of resignation: "I have resigned in protest at the election of Jim Smithers as mayor.

"I am unhappy with the way he was elected. I don't think he is the right person to be mayor and I think he will be bad for the town, and Mandy thinks the same."

Councillor Philips said she was resigning because she had had enough of "backbiting" and "rudeness" at meetings.

Councillor Smithers said unfounded allegations had been made about him around Ludlow.

He said the allegations were investigated by the police and added: "I have co-operated with the police fully throughout their investigations and they said there was no case to answer."
