Adam Cawley, who lives in the town, reported the burst on Twitter along with a video showing the jet of water reaching several dozen metres high.
Severn Trent Water responded, saying: "We are aware and are already on site arranging a repair."
The burst near Lodge Hill Farm was still spraying water at about 5pm, when a digger was seen working near the hole.
The fountain stopped by 6pm, with another Twitter user Kevin Bickerton posting more pictures.
