Telford householders warned of bogus callers over energy grants

Telford & Wrekin Council has issued a fresh warning to residents about bogus energy grants.

While approved installers can offer them, the council is aware that there are some unscrupulous callers trying to take advantage. It is urging residents to make sure an installer offering such a grant is approved.

The genuine grants are part of the “Energy Company Obligation” (ECO), a government efficiency scheme aimed at reducing carbon emissions and tackling fuel poverty.

Special criteria called ECOflex, published by the council on its website, tailors the approach in order that more people in Telford and Wrekin qualify for free or partially funded measures. Suppliers must promote measures which improve the ability of low income, fuel poor and vulnerable households to heat their homes, including replacing or upgrading heating systems.

Councillor Paul Watling, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for cooperative communities, engagement and partnerships: “This is why it’s important that residents make sure they are dealing with approved installers, for they will know what to do in relation to getting energy grants.

“All contractors should carry ID and observe any Covid rules in place.

They should fully explain the scheme and offer you time to consider the offer if needed.

“Telford & Wrekin Council has not authorised door knocking on its behalf, nor does it work in partnership with or promote contractors, or check the quality of work completed.

“Our partners provide a free phone line called ‘Telford Energy Advice’ which can give free and impartial information on grants including ECO, as well as advice on energy bills and keeping warm at home. You can contact them on 0800 677 1952 or email advice@mea.org.uk

“If you are concerned by an approach about energy grants from a cold caller, please report it to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service, freephone 0808 223 1133.”
