Staff from Veolia, the company responsible for cleaning the streets, collecting bins and recycling waste in the Telford & Wrekin area, decided to send their £500 bonus to Hilbrae Rescue Kennels.

The money has come from a safety incentive set up by Veolia, and was presented to workers at the Household Recycling Centre in Bridgnorth, who in turn decided to donate it to the charity, based in Cold Hatton, Telford.

To keep their staff safe the company offers a bonus if workers do not have any accidents.

Marty Burrell from Hilbrae said the money would allow them to look after more abandoned dogs.

He said: "We are grateful for all donations which enable us to help dogs from all over the place as well as the stray dogs that we take from the whole of Shropshire.”

Angela James of Veolia said: “Staff receive the bonus if they do not have any accidents. This encourages everyone to pay particular attention to their health and safety. They can use the money in any way they like, but the lads opted to donate their £500 to Hilbrae."

She added: "The staff at the Household Recycling Centre in Bridgnorth decided that they would like to donate to Hilbrae Rescue Kennels as they are all dog lovers and the charity is only a small independent charity, which relies on donations for their continued work.”
