And, judging by shoppers on a grey day in Wellington, attitudes haven’t changed much since.

People universally spoke of being ‘fed up’ of politics, with most declaring that another election wouldn’t change anything.

Paul Stevens, 58, who works as a HGV driver and lives in Priorslee, said: "I used to pay an interest in what was happening in politics but as I've got older it's taken more of a back seat role in my life – and at this rate I'm glad it has.

"It seems to be a never ending limbo of not knowing what's going on.

"I'm not sure the authorities in charge really know what's going on so how are we supposed to know what's going on?

"I think another election would help to kick things into gear a bit but at the same time someone else might not do any better."

Late

While the general consensus seemed to be in favour of another election, some shoppers pointed out it could be too little too late.

Fred Smith, 76, of Wellington, said: "I voted leave and I still think it's what's best for the country in the long run.

"I don't think having an election would help anything as what's been done has already happened and we can't change that no matter who is in charge.

"I think we need to just stick with our guns and see it all out and then we can look at what position we're in then."

Needed

Eileen Thompson, 72, from Wellington, said she has seen the Government change hands over the years but that an election is needed now more than ever.

"I think everyone's just lost confidence in the way our country is being run," she said.

"All this nonsense about Brexit has been going on for far too long and even when you think they're going to get something done, we seem to have another delay.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we have another election soon and if we do I don't think Theresa May will stay and I'm not sure the Conservative party would even win."
