The 740 service at 9.45am between Knighton and Ludlow was cancelled as the cold spell in the region continued.

Snow was reported in Ludlow, Clee Hill, in parts of the south Shropshire hills and mid Wales.

Roads including the B4364 at Cleobury were described as "treacherous" by police and motorists urged only to travel if necessary.

A mother and child were involved in a crash when their car left the road in snowy conditions in south Shropshire.

A Met Office snow warning covering much of mid Wales and parts of Shropshire including Clun was in place until 11am today.

Rain and sleet was also due to affect motorists throughout the West Midlands.

Today's cold weather followed more widespread snowfall yesterday in areas including Shrewsbury and Cockshutt, near Ellesmere.

Elsewhere in the country, commuters faced severe delays on Thursday morning after rail companies blamed icy conditions for cancelled services.

Southeastern halted some trains completely and warned of disruption to others but commuters were scornful of journeys being affected by a “tiny bit of ice”.

Snow fell in parts of South Wales amid a yellow warning for the region from the Met Office, which forecast between 0.8in (2cm) and (2.4in) 6cm.
