The West Shropshire Talking Newspaper (WSTN) is starting a friends group for people who want to support the group, but who are not able to take part as a hands-on volunteer.

The WSTN is inviting interested people to sign up, as friends, and pledge a small amount of money, monthly or annually, towards the organisation's running costs which are around £11,000 a year.

The charity said it will be arranging an official launch in June to which potential donors will be invited to hear an explanation of the weekly free service for people who cannot read printed newspapers.

Friends of the group will have the opportunity to visit the studio, attend social events and will also receive the annual report and other updates.

The WSTN provides a free recorded paper each week on USB memory sticks via Royal Mail, as well as online, on the telephone (01743 387487), on an app and through Amazon’s Alexa.

Chairman Peter Waller said: “The Friends of the WSTN has been set up for those people who would like to support us but are too busy to actually volunteer. It is a splendid opportunity to make a difference to a dedicated, hands-on local charity.”

Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a friend can leave a message on the charity’s answerphone, 01743 364726.

Additionally, the WSTN website, www.wstn.org.uk has a downloadable standing order form.

Any Friends enrolling in this way before May 12 will automatically be invited to the official launch as well as those who have already become friends recently.
