Hours spent pounding the pavements have paid off in more ways than one for Sally Johnson.

She has been preparing to run the Disney Half Marathon in memory of her son Harry, who died of cancer when he was just seven.

After a family holiday to the Paris-based theme park to mark Sally's 40th, the little boy from Vennington, near Shrewsbury, had wished to return.

But unfortunately he was too ill to travel and died just weeks later.

Now, on Sunday on what would have been his 12th birthday, Sally will be on the start line with three friends to make their way through the Val d'Europe site where they will pass some of the most famous characters and buildings, including Mickey Mouse and Cinderella's fairytale castle.

She is running to raise money for the charity she set up in her son's name - which supports children with cancer in Shropshire and Mid Wales and their families.

The quartet aim to raise £2,500 - the cost of a holiday for a child and their family to a caravan park on the Welsh coast.

"I have really enjoyed the running," she said. "It gives me headspace and time to think. And it has had other benefits too - I have lost more than two-and-a-half stone. I feel great.

"We have run in some lovely towns in Shropshire and I have met some wonderful people. The four of us have all found it hard but it is something we have all felt passionately about."

Sally will be running alongside her friends Claire Jones, Jo Croft and Sam Dorsett. Last month they completed the Ellesmere 10K and also took park in the Cancer UK Race for Life in Shrewsbury earlier in the year.
