War talk by solider
A soldier with more than 30 years experience will be giving a talk at the University Centre Shrewsbury on one of the most infamous battles of World War One.
A talk by Simon Jarman MBE on March 29 will speaking on Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, which became known for the horrifyingly high number of casualties, for the dogged persistence of Earl Haig in continuing with the offensive despite its seeming ineffectiveness – and for its mud.
Simon was a soldier for 30 years, and his encounters in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Rwanda and many other locations have given him an insight of the experiences of modern conflict. A keen amateur historian who has visited a variety of WW1 and WW2 sites, Simon regularly gives talks and presentations on WW1.
A Personal View of Passchendaele will provide an overview of the Battle of Passchendaele along with a personalised account of the first-hand experiences of his great uncle’s experiences taken from Simon’s book, Gentleman Jim of the 20 DLI. There will also be an opportunity to view some of Simon’s war memorabilia including deactivated weapons from 1916, medals, trench art, and more.
