Oswestry Town Council bestowed the honour on Miss Betty Gull and Mr Bill Bowen at a ceremony in the town.

The council says it is in recognition of their very significant contribution to the community of Oswestry and for demonstrating “service above self”.

Bill Bowen BEM has dedicated his time to helping others, whether through the Oswestry Lions Club, as a volunteer chaplain at the RJAH or with the parish church. Over many years Bill has raised thousands of pounds for local good causes.

His nominator stated “Bill has given so much to the local community and to receive Freeman of Oswestry would be the community giving him something back – not that he would ever expect anything."

Betty Gull served as a town councillor for almost 40 years and was mayor three times.

As chairman of Oswestry in Bloom, Miss Gull has overseen 13 gold awards and can be often seen hands on, weeding and planting in the town centre.

Honour

Her nominator for the Freeman said: “She is a remarkable lady who loves Oswestry and who has given years to its service. I really do think she deserves the recognition for her efforts on Oswestry’s behalf."

As chairman of Oswestry Borderland Tourism she worked to ensure that Oswestry always had something to offer and was a welcoming place to visit.

The honour will be awarded for the individual’s lifetime and not as a hereditary award.

Individuals from all walks of life and all sections of the community who have made a difference to Oswestry are eligible to be nominated as Honorary Freemen. Several nominations were received this year, all of whom have given outstanding contribution to the town.

The Mayor of Oswestry, Councillor John Price, said: “It was a difficult decision for the council, being Freeman of your town is the highest honour that can be bestowed. Both individuals have made a significant, lifelong contribution to the community in a voluntary capacity."

Honorary Freemen are invited to all civic events and functions.
