Welcome to this week's selection of nostalgia photos from the pages of the Shropshire Star.
The Air Training Corps celebrates its 80th anniversary this month so today we're going back to the beginnings of the movement with this photo of the 1193 North Shropshire Squadron of the ATC, based at Ellesmere, around 1941 or 1942. The photo came originally from Walter Vickers, of Ellesmere, who is third row down, extreme left. Second row down, extreme right, is his friend Ken McKenzie. The photo was taken when the cadets were going to RAF Shawbury and looking forward to flying.
This picture was taken on May 29, 1968, at Wem Parish Church garden party held in the rectory gardens. Our original caption back then said that the event was "opened by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Shrewsbury, Councillor and Mrs Dennis Pursell. Following the opening eight-year-old Caroline Edwards presented a bouquet to the Deputy Mayoress. From left are: Councillor Pursell, Preb J B Morson, Rector of Wem Parish Church, Mrs and Mr E J Edwards, assistant secretary and chairman, with Caroline and Mrs Pursell."
Time was running out for the Wem Town Hall clock in February 1983. Town hall caretaker Michael Maddocks is seen with the clock which the town council was putting up for sale. Since 1911 the clock had given residents the time, but despite continued repairs the clock was no longer accurate, so the council decided to replace it and to offer the old one as a collector's item. Which raises the question – where is it now?
A young lady admires the blooms amid the picturesque ruins of Wenlock Abbey at Much Wenlock. If that young lady is still with us, she must be pushing 100 now, as this photo dates from April 1938
This picture, which is slightly damaged, shows potato pickers at Monkmoor Farm, Monkmoor, in the late 1950s. It was loaned to us by Alun Evans, of Underdale Avenue, Shrewsbury, who tells us: "The man on the left standing with the cap is my dad, Fred Evans, who was farm foreman. The lady wearing glasses is Mrs Cleveley, who lived on the old Monkmoor camp airfield. My family lived in one of seven cottages belonging to the farm."
This should be familiar to quite a few Salopians as it will have been part of their education. This is Radbrook College, Shrewsbury, seen on August 30, 1966. It was, according to the accompanying story "now a fully fledged college of education running three year courses leading to institutional management, and the teaching of home economics in schools and adult centres."
