Nurses, GPs and other NHS staff have offered the life-saving jab to people living at more than 10,000 care homes with older residents in England.

The small remainder have had their visits deferred by local directors of public health for safety reasons during a local outbreak.

Those homes will be visited and jabbed as soon as NHS staff are allowed to do so.

Staff and residents at homes in Shropshire have been celebrating the milestone, including Portland House in Belvidere Road, Shrewsbury.

Manager Denise Jones said: “We’ve had the first lot of vaccinations. Everyone was vaccinated on the same day on January 18.

"That was done by Dr Leach from Belvidere Medical Practice next door. She’s pushing for us to have the second lot a bit sooner than planned as well.

“The residents are very relieved that something is happening. It means they’ll be able to see their loved ones properly. At the moment we can only do pod visits.

"There’s a microphone in there but they don’t always understand using it.”
