Information on offer for parents of children with ‘Big Six’ illness

Parents, carers and health care professionals in Shropshire are being encouraged to learn the best ways to care for children who become ill with gastroenteritis.

Gastroenteritis causes diarrhoea and vomiting in children and is one of ‘The Big Six’ illnesses most commonly seen in under 16s that can lead to children and young people being seen by urgent and emergency care services.

Information packs are available on Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Groups’ websites, making it easy to access the advice and guidance.

This information pack lists the symptoms associated with the illness and tells you the best method of treatment for your child depending on the severity of their symptoms.

Dr Julian Povey, chairman of Shropshire CCG, said: “I would highly recommend that all parents and carers looking after young children keep a copy of these advice sheets handy.

“They are excellent tools to help you to make the best decision for your child should they come down with a stomach bug or any of ‘The Big Six’ common illnesses that affect young children.”

Dr Jo Leahy, chairwoman of Telford and Wrekin CCG, said: “By making use of our information pack, you can be sure you are giving your child the best possible care and that they are back to their normal selves as soon as possible.”

The pack includes information about the warning signs to look out for, questions that you can use to assess the seriousness of your child’s illness, and advice on actions you need to take in response to your child’s symptoms.
