A Shropshire MP today said he was disappointed and "surprised" at funding recalculations which have put the future of a new £27 million hospital in doubt.

Philip Dunne spoke out after the Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust's board revealed there was a £1.1 million-a-year gap in funding for the new Ludlow Hospital.

Health chiefs said the shortfall meant the project could not move forward without additional financial support.

Ludlow MP Mr Dunne said: "I am extremely disappointed that further delay has been injected into this project at this late stage. I have worked hard in recent months to resolve technical problems resulting from legislative change to the structure of the NHS.

"It was therefore a considerable surprise to discover, once these issues had been cleared, that there were revised assumptions about activity levels being proposed for the new facility. The important thing now is to focus efforts of all those involved in this project on solutions."
