Competition will be fierce at Annual Field Day
Shropshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs has developed a series of training events in preparation for forthcoming competitions, providing opportunities to young people who have a love for agriculture and rural life, writes Sarah Hamlett.
Sunday is the Annual Field Day, which this year will be held at Burwarton Showground. Members flock to the site to participate in competitions, ranging from "efficiency with safety" to "farm business development". Competition is fierce as each club seeks to win the Chronicle Challenge Cup awarded to the club with the most points. This year members have a huge advantage as Ludlow Rotary Club and Burwarton Show have sponsored training events such as welding, flower arranging, first aid and food hygiene, to boost skills and confidence in light of the upcoming events.
Ed Potter, 26, from Dorrington Young Farmers' Club, believes these opportunities are extremely valuable.
He says: "Engaging our younger members physically through learning practical skills opens up opportunities for the future. At the same time, putting topical issues such as safety around the farm environment into a real life situation reinforces its importance."
Ed, who is county vice chairman and owner of his own business, Oak Apple Catering, wants members to make the most of these opportunities, as they form the foundation to many life situations.
Another valuable competition is "farm business development", where teams of two are asked to create a business plan to present to a panel of judges. This strengthens core skills such as confidence, problem-solving and the ability to work in a team.
Each of the county's 18 active Young Farmers' Cubs will be represented at the Field Day. Come along from 10am for a fun-filled family day out with refreshments available throughout the day.
Another approaching event is the County Rally, which is at Lawns Farm, Calverhall, on June 27.
