A Mid Wales dairy farm has completed a notable hat-trick by winning the Bill Higgins Cup at Shrewsbury Auction Centre for the third year running.

David and Sally Gethin, of The Gaer, Montgomery, collected the cup at the centre's prize show and sale on Tuesday, November 14 for a freshly calved Montgomery Benny heifer from their Brymar herd.

It's the fifth time that a Powys dairy breeder has won the cup, which was presented by the family of the late Mr Higgins in 1996. The first winner was Messrs J. and J. Beavan and Sons of Winsbury, Chirbury.

The prize show was judged by Mr W. Blockley of Cheshire who had a difficult task selecting from an entry of 45 very good cattle.

The heifer class was particularly strong, with the Reserve Champion by Moet Silver from Tomkinsons Farms of Gnosall achieving the day's top price of £1,210. The prize for best cow went to Messrs R. B. and P. J. Draper of Ensdon, Shrewsbury with a Hayleys Tremendous second calver.

Shrewsbury Auction Centre will be holding its Christmas Prize Show and Sale for dairy cattle on Tuesday, December 19, the week after the Christmas Fatstock Show and Sale.
