Bomb squad on scene for controlled explosion at Shrewsbury school
The bomb squad were on the scene of a controlled explosion at Shrewsbury High School today.
West Mercia Police say they were assisting the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team at the school to remove a known substance.
It comes after the Department for Education wrote to all schools reminding them of their responsibility to store chemicals safely and responsibly.
A Department for Education spokesman said: "A few weeks ago we wrote to all schools about their responsibility to keep chemicals stored safely, with the main one being 2,4 DNT which is used for the post 16 science curriculum.
"If you don't keep it properly it dries up. When in its liquid paste form it is inert but when it dries up it becomes like a clay and becomes very volatile.
"Schools are compelled to keep these chemicals properly but we became aware a few weeks back some schools weren't.
"We wrote to them to say they needed to make sure they were keeping it safely and if they had any concern they were to contact CLEAPSS which is the organisation responsible for the safe storage of chemicals in schools.
"The schools describe how they store the chemicals and CLEAPSS would advise whether they needed to call police to arrange a controlled explosion."
