Jess, a black and white pet, was thought to have been attacked in a Telford park off Glendale, Lawley.

Her devastated owner 81-year-old Mary Bradley said she took in the kitten just three months ago after it was found wandering the streets.

"She went out on Saturday morning and that's when it happened. She managed to come back home and crawled underneath some furniture, but she didn't look right," she said.

"Then when my daughter Veronica picked her up her hands were covered in blood so we knew something was seriously wrong.

"She put her in the basket and rushed her to the vets because we couldn't see where the blood was coming from. Her coat was quite long.

"The vet did an X-ray and found that she had been shot. The pellet went straight through her stomach and was lodged just behind her spine. I don't know how she managed to crawl back home.

"Jess was my company because I'm disabled and I can't walk very far.

"There is a quite a bit of anti-social behaviour in this area at the moment."

She added: "I'm worried there might be more incidents like this. There are a lot of families on the estate and the children like to use the play area. I'm very wary now about going outside."

West Mercia Police spokesman Paul Roberts said: "I can confirm we received a report of a cat being shot by a pellet gun in the Glendale area of Lawley, Telford."
