Woman dies in crash with tractor and baler on A5

A woman has died in a crash between a car and a tractor towing a hay baler in Shropshire. The female passenger of the car has not been named.

She died in the accident on the A5 near Shifnal shortly before 10pm yesterday.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "Crews found a car which had been in collision with a hay baler towed by a tractor. The car had suffered significant damage. Sadly the passenger, a woman, suffered fatal injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene.

"The driver, a man, was assessed on scene by crews and had no serious injuries. Due to the damage caused to the car, the man was taken to New Cross Hospital as a precaution. No-one else was injured in the crash."

The road was closed until 6.10am.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the smash.

Meanwhile, a man was airlifted to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment following a collision involving a van and a 4x4 on the Shropshire/Powys border. The incident occurred at about 2.50pm yesterday close to Beguildy, near Knighton.

And a road in Telford was closed for 90 minutes after a the collision of two vehicles.

The incident occurred yesterday at about 1.50pm in Rock Road, Overdale, and involved a Mini and a Volkswagen Polo.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said the road was closed until about 3.10pm.

No-one was believed to have been seriously injured.
