Shrewsbury MP joins push for new school
The Government is to be pressed on funding for a new secondary school to serve the north of Shrewsbury.
Shrewsbury and Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski is supporting Shrewsbury Academies Trust in its bid to raise money for the new school, which would replace the Grange and Sundorne schools.
Mr Kawczynski said he would be writing to the Education Secretary Nicky Morgan to request funding.
He said: "The schools are in most urgent need of investment and redevelopment because of the buildings. They were built in the 1950s and have come to the end of their shelf life."
"I am writing to Nicky Morgan, the education secretary, to ask her to visit and see the inventive cooperation between the two schools and the way they have gone about getting academy status.
"I will be urging the need for investment from the Department of Education to build a single brand new school."
Mr Kawczynski said the buildings had been neglected for too long.
He said: "That area represents an area which needs a great deal of investment from a schools perspective.
"I have toured the schools in the past and I was disappointed there had not been sufficient funds for the modernisation of the buildings for some time."
A merger between Sundorne and the Grange was signed off by the regional schools commissioner earlier this week.
Geoff Pettengell, SAT executive principal, praised Mr Kawczynski for his support. He said:
"We appreciate his support and hope the secretary of state will come on board and see the benefits to the north of the town – replacing 1950s buildings with a new school, which is what the community deserves.
