New £4.5 million Telford school gets the go-ahead
Work will soon begin on a £4.5 million primary school in Telford.
Borough councillors last night gave the green light to buy land in Lawley and appoint contractors for the 210-place Lawley Village Primary Academy, which could be open by the beginning of 2016.
It will be built off Martingale Way in Lawley, an area where 3,400 homes are being built. Councillors have already been told there are not enough school places to meet the expected demand.
The new school will have scope for expansion to cater for up to 400 pupils.
Planning permission, which also includes a playing field and a room available for use by community groups, was granted in the summer despite concerns over increased traffic from Lawley and Overdale Parish Council.
But last night's full meeting of Telford &Wrekin Borough Council gave the plan unanimous support, voting it through with no debate.
A report prepared by Kathy Swallow, service delivery manager for school organisation services at the council, said there had been a "significant amount of housing growth" in the area over the past decade.
