Shrewsbury pupils earn top mark from Ofsted
Pupils at a Shrewsbury school have been praised for their outstanding behaviour, exceptional attitude to learning and their excellent approach to literacy and numeracy in a report by inspectors from Ofsted.
Inspectors visited The Wilfred Owen School, in Monkmoor, and gave it an overall rating of good with outstanding in behaviour and safety of pupils.
The report said: "Pupils are polite and courteous and their outstanding attitudes and behaviour make a significant contribution to their achievement. Pupils say that they feel safe in school.
"Literacy, calculation and mathematical skills are developed well across all subjects and there was evidence of some interesting and exciting opportunities for investigation and problem solving.
"Pupils' outstanding behaviour and attitudes make an excellent contribution to their learning and progress. They discuss challenging tasks very sensibly and show high levels of respect for each other's views. The behaviour of pupils and their attitudes to learning are exceptional."
Inspectors did criticise teachers at the 210-place primary school for setting work that was too easy and said pupils were not always given enough opportunities to work independently. It was also noted that while most teaching assistants are very skilled in supporting pupils, some do too much to help them.
Headteacher Chris Huss said: "It is really pleasing that the hard work of all staff, governors, pupils, volunteers and parents has been recognised by this good and outstanding report.
"We are especially pleased that the behaviour of our children and their attitudes to learning have earned such high praise and recognition. As a school that has always prided itself on a very strong ethos I am delighted that this element of our school has been recognised and praised by the inspection team."
Chair of governors, Miles Kenny, said: "This is terrific achievement, which everyone – staff, pupils, parents and governors – worked hard for, firmly putting the Wilfred Owen School in the heart of the community. A big thanks to everyone."
Fellow governor, Wendy Ford, added: "This is a superb report and a fitting tribute to the dedication and hard work of all the staff."
