Three cops assaulted at railway station brawl involving Shrewsbury Town fans

Officers have appealed for information for witnesses after Salop fans clashed with Sheffield Wednesday supporter.

Three transport police officers were assaulted and one treated in hospital after fighting involving Shrewsbury Town fans.

Supporters were reported to be involved in “large scale” violence with Sheffield Wednesday fans at Sheffield railway station on Saturday after Salop’s thrilling 3-3 draw at Rotherham United.

It was described by witnesses as “the worst” seen in Sheffield in 10 or 15 years.

Now the British Transport Police has urged anyone who witnessed it to get in touch.

A spokesperson said: “We responded to an incident of football related disorder at Sheffield Midland station at 6.15pm on Saturday, October 24.

“Three BTP officers were assaulted with one requiring hospital treatment for an injury to their finger.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information should contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 648 of 24 October. Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

An eye-witness to the incident told the Sheffield Star that fans from different clubs arriving at the station on Saturday (October 24) evening clashed on a platform.

Wednesday fans were returning to the city following their 2-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers.

It is alleged missiles such as glass bottles were thrown from one group to another and police arrived at the scene quickly, before smaller incidents involving other fans passing through later in the evening.

Dozens of police vehicles were pictured parked outside the station just before 7pm on Saturday evening, with another witness saying they had “never seen so many cop cars in my life”, with an estimate of 50 vehicles seen and more reportedly being driven down the Parkway shortly after.

South Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and Shrewsbury Town FC have been contacted for more information.
