Fly-tipping hotspot in Oswestry dubbed 'worst in town' finally cleared

A “fly-tipping hot-spot” in Oswestry – deemed the worst in the town – has finally been cleared.

The site, next to Crestwood Court in Oswestry, has been an eyesore for over a year, with dumped furniture, bags, mattresses and more piling up.

Residents were getting increasingly irate at the length of time it was taking to clear, but with the work now complete, they are hoping that the enforcement in place will keep the neighbourhood tidier and prevent more repeat offences.

Earlier this year, Oswestry Town Council funded and installed the CCTV and had the area confirmed as the town’s “worst fly-tipping site” after a visit from Veolia, the group that runs Shropshire Council’s waste services.

A campaign to clear the area was led by Lib Dem councillor Jay Moore, who represents Gateacre Ward on Oswestry Town Council.

A multi-agency team consisting of Shropshire Council, Veolia, STAR Housing, West Mercia Police and local members was set up to tackle the issue which was getting worse. However, it has finally been sorted.

“I have been pushing everybody for what seems like years now to try and bring a resolution to this issue and am delighted that the area has finally been cleared,” said Cllr Moore.

“Having met Cllr David Vasmer, the new portfolio holder, and showed him the issue in person a couple of weeks ago, it is a testament to how the closer working relationships between us as town councillors and the new administration at Shropshire Council has meant that hard work can be backed up with fast action on issues that matter locally.

“I am extremely thankful for the Street Scene team for all their work to clear this mess in challenging circumstances, and for everyone else involved in the process.”
