Paul Morris, aged 40, smacked his former girlfriend over the head repeatedly with her own mobile phone and caused her to bang her head on a cabinet during her ordeal.

Shrewsbury Crown Court was told how the pair had been a relationship but, when he turned up at her home on April 26 this year, they had split and he was banned from seeing her due to separate allegations of criminal damage.

Morris "made himself at home", and was speaking to one of the victim's friends. But when that friend left, Morris "became verbally abusive" and accused her of stealing his phone, prosecutor Dean Easthope told the court.

He grabbed her by the throat and, such was the force he used, "she couldn't even scream," Mr Easthope said.
