The incident happened at the Bulls Head pub, Shrewsbury, and left victim Matthew Allen with damage to his teeth and his nose.

At the time of the assault in July this year, Peter Scott was the subject of a suspended sentence for violence.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court Recorder Anthony Lowe jailed Scott for a total of 13 months.

He imposed 10 months for the attack on Mr Allen and added the three-month suspended sentence imposed by magistrates last year.

Scott, who gave The Bulls Head in Castle Gates as his address, had pleaded guilty to causing Mr Allen actual bodily harm.

The court heard that there had been a dispute and some shouting and 'finger pointing' involving a group of customers, which had included Scott's son.

Mr John Oates, prosecuting, said that Scott stepped in and struck Mr Allen in the face, which broke a tooth and damaged the septum of his nose that led to breathing difficulties.

He said the victim needed £1,400 worth of dental treatment and surgery to his nose to help ease the breathing problems.

The court heard the incident was caught on CCTV in the pub and following his arrest Scott said he could not recollect what happened.

Scott was said to have 23 convictions most of which involved violence and were frequently associated with drinking.

Mr Paul Smith, for Scott, said his client apologised for the pain and distress caused to the victim.

He said Scott, who was addressing his drink problems, had 'stepped in' believing he was protecting his son who was in a vulnerable position.
