It is believed the thieves broke into Kerry Paul Jewellery in Shortbridge Street, Newtown, using a sledgehammer, before leaving with men's and women's watches, gold rings, silver jewellery and other items. The value of the jewellery is unclear.

Dyfed-Powys Police are currently investigating the burglary but no-one yet has been arrested.

Debbie Price, owner of the shop, says she's been left "devastated" by the break-in, which happened during the early hours of Wednesday.

She said: "We're only a small business, so this has really hit us, and especially because of the way they've broken in through the brick wall, which we think was done using a sledgehammer possibly.

"It's extremely upsetting, we just can't believe it's happened. It's really unfair when you're running your own business for this to happen.

"I just don't understand why this has happened."

The jewellers has been in the town for more than 30 years.

DC Beverley Brice, based at Newtown Police Station, said: "Witnesses to any suspicious activity in the town centre during this time or anyone who has since been offered jewellery for sale can speak confidentially to us at Newtown CID on 101."
