Ms Allan said "shining a light" on the events of the past was the best way to learn lessons in the future as she addressed the PM in the Commons.

The Prime Minister agreed there were "important lessons" that needed to be learnt but stepped away from giving her backing to a new probe.

Mrs May said: "It's for the authorities in Telford to look specifically at how they would wish to address these issues in Telford."

Ms Allan backed calls for a "Rotherham-style" inquiry into how child sex exploitation had been handled in the town before Operation Chalice, which saw seven men jailed for a total of nearly 50 years in 2012.

But Telford & Wrekin Council chiefs say there is no need, having been the subject of three separate reviews already this year.

Ofsted rated its Children's Safeguarding Board as "good" in a recent inspection and praised the work being done to tackle child sexual exploitation.
