A man shot himself in the head with a pellet gun during an argument with his girlfriend before shouting at police officers and throwing a glass clock at them, a court has heard.

Lewis Williams, 23, was "like a wild animal" when officers entered a bungalow in Shavington Park in Market Drayton to restrain him.

They had been called after receiving reports that a man had shot himself. One officer received minor injuries while dealing with Williams.

Staff at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital found Williams had two pellets lodged in his skull – one from the incident and another from being shot as a child. Surgeons chose not to remove either, one of which was close to his cheekbone and the other behind one of his eyes.

Lewis, a dairy worker, had admitted a charge of affray in relation to the events of December 22 at a previous hearing. He was handed a 16-month jail sentence suspended for two years when he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

Williams, of Silverdale, Newcastle-under-Lyme, was told to attend anger management classes and handed a community service order for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay £1,400 costs.
