Date announced for closure of Market Drayton's Sports Direct store

Retailer Sports Direct is set to close its Market Drayton store next week.

Staff at the store in Frogmore Road, Market Drayton, said the shop is due to close next Friday.

Last month it emerged the branch was closing after signs were put up in the window saying it will close in April.

But the chain, owned by millionaire businessman and Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, has still not made an official announcement about the closure.

The firm is pulling out of Market Drayton – just two years after it opened a shop in the town – potentially leaving several people out of work.

The news has been met with sadness by councillors and residents, who said it was a big blow and a “real pity”.

It is not yet known how many jobs will be lost, or whether staff will be offered the opportunity to move to a neighbouring branch.

The Sports Direct store was much-heralded when it opened in the former Poundstretcher store in 2015.

Its closure means residents in the town will have to travel 15 miles to to its nearest branch in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
