Managers said redundancies would be avoided where possible, but admitted that jobs had to go to put the company on a firmer financial footing.
In a statement today, a spokesman said the job losses were a result of "restructuring" the company.
He said: "Wrekin Construction, one of Shropshire's largest privately-owned employers, is refocusing its attention on core business areas. This requires some elements of restructuring.
"In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the company, and safeguard the employment of its workforce and supply chain, Wrekin Construction is reorganising some of its business streams.
"This will lead to some jobs being lost. Redundancies will be avoided wherever possible following consultation with staff.
"The maximum number of anticipated job losses will be about 26. About half of this number will be from the office in Shifnal."
Today's news comes after rumours of much bigger job losses circulated among staff in the company, which employs around 840 people.
Figures released in September showed Wrekin Construction's parent company, Wrekin Group, had turned a £1.7 million loss into a £1.7 million profit for the year.
