Anger as healthy tree is cut down on Ludlow estate

A row has broken out after a healthy, mature tree was cut down in Ludlow.

The tree, one of two in a green area next to Charlton Rise and Sydney Road, was felled without the knowledge of Shropshire councillors in the town. It led to fears that the second tree would also be cut down.

But Shropshire Housing Group, which was behind the felling, last night agreed to suspend work until further discussions have taken place with Shropshire Council.

The controversy follows a dispute over the planned felling of two oak trees on Whitcliffe Common, a beauty spot on the edge of the town.

Councillor Andy Boddington, Shropshire councillor for Ludlow North, said: "Shropshire Council is considering an emergency tree protection order but the danger is the second tree will be lost before that arrives."

"All of us councillors are furious with this action," he said.
