But the crystal clarity of those images are in marked contrast to the dawn that followed, which was shrouded in thick fog.

The madcap weather followed a week in which many areas were swamped by more than half an inch of rain as humid air from the south bubbled up to create violent thunderstorms. Forecasters say that the electric storms of Tuesday night created enough power nationally to boil 90 million cups of tea

The UK was hammered by almost 20,000 lightning strikes, hundreds of them in Shropshire and Mid Wales.

Today rain is explected to clear slowly to the east during the morning, leaving drier and brighter conditions across the region by the afternoon, turning fresher with lengthy sunny spells to end the day.

It is expected to be fine and dry on Saturday with sunny spells, turning cloudy into Sunday, although dry at first with outbreaks of rain later.
