Man dies after falling from bridge on to M6 near junction with M54
A man has died after falling from a bridge on to the M6 today near to the junction with the M54.
Both the north and southbound carriageways were closed between Junction 10 for the Black Country and 10a for the M54 from 9.30am after a man fell from Bentley Lane Bridge.
He was taken to hospital by air ambulance.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: "On arrival, crews discovered a male patient on the motorway carriageway.
"He was treated at the scene for serious injuries before being airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
"Unfortunately, shortly after arrival at the hospital it became evident nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed deceased."
The southbound carriageway opened again at around 10am, but northbound drivers were stuck on the motorway for more than an hour.
Highways England thanked drivers for their patience when they fully opened the road at 10.40am.
West Midlands Police spokesperson Kate Baker said: "Emergency services are currently responding to reports of a man falling from a bridge over the M6. Motorists are advised to avoid the area."
A West Midlands Ambulance spokesman said staff received a call about the incident at 9.23am.
The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford was sent to the scene, along with an ambulance, doctor paramedic and area support team.
The incident follows an earlier crash near Birmingham which caused southbound delays.
There were tailbacks as far back as the M54 after the smash happened near Spaghetti Junction at around 7.30am.
