Controversial plans to build 21 homes in a village on the Shropshire border have been withdrawn.

The scheme earmarked for land next to Birds Nest in Audlem, near Market Drayton, have been withdrawn after a storm of opposition.

The plans were put forward in August by the Tonks family but caused concerns from residents who feared the village will see too much development. Audlem Parish Council objected to the plans branding it an "unwanted" addition to the village.

Clerk Kirstin Dixon said: "Audlem Parish Council strongly objects to this application for outline permission for 21 dwellings plus access. This is yet another unwanted, speculative development outside the Audlem Settlement Boundary.

"As the planning department will be aware, over the last nine months Audlem has had two significant developments approved due to the failure of Cheshire East Council to convince the planning inspectorate that they had a viable five-year housing land supply.

"As a result the village already faces the prospect of a further 146 homes built on good quality greenfield land outside the settlement boundary."

The council added that it did not "comply" with the neighbourhood plan detailing development residents in the area were happy to see, and said there was a "lack of community involvement and consultation" with people in the village.

But agents Bower Edleston Architects on behalf of the applicants said previously that the development would allow "modest growth to complement other recent approved land for housing".

The plans had been withdrawn from the Cheshire East Council planning agenda.
