George Cook had been attempting to park his black Peugeot outside his home in Arleston Avenue, Arleston, when he drove into the rear of a parked Vauxhall Astra, the town's magistrates heard.

The court heard that the incident caused damage to the car's number plate.

Mrs Abigail Hall, prosecuting, said police officers later went to his home and he was given a breath test, with a positive result.

The 67-year-old was arrested and taken to the police station where he was given another test which recorded 101 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Mrs Hall said he told police he had been to visit his wife, who has cancer, in hospital and he had driven to a pub where he consumed several pints of lager afterwards.

Cook admitted driving a vehicle while above the legal alcohol limit on December 3.

Mr Steve Meredith, for Cook, said he had been fully co-operative with police and had shown genuine remorse.

He had been married for 44 years and his wife's cancer had been having a dramatic effect on his emotions. As well as the two-year driving ban, Cook was ordered to pay a £250 fine, £25 victim surcharge, £150 criminal court charge and £135 costs.
