Football match abandoned after brawl

A police investigation has been launched after a brawl led to a youth football match being abandoned.

Newtown AFC under-19s' home match against Airbus UK Broughton was called off after 80 minutes when a fight broke out after two visiting players were sent off .

According to a club statement, a number of Newtown players suffered minor injuries and the referee abandoned the Welsh Premier Development League match, which Newtown were losing 2-1.

A complaint was made to Dyfed-Powys Police and officers are looking into what happened.

An investigation will also be held by both clubs and the Welsh Premier League.

Owen Durbridge, Newtown club secretary, said: "The referee chose to abandon the match after 80-plus minutes following two dismissals for Airbus and a brawl breaking out in which several Newtown players sustained minor injuries.

"The club has initiated an inquiry to get reports from the players and spectators, and has reported the matter to Airbus officials and to the Welsh Premier League.

Airbus have confirmed they are investigating the matter and the League has referred the matter to the compliance department at the Welsh Premier League. The police are also investigating the matter following complaints made to them."

Dyfed-Powys Police were unavailable for comment.
