Setbacks to £44m Oswestry railway upgrade plan
A £44 million scheme to upgrade the train line north of Oswestry may be delayed until 2016 due to "setbacks".
The work was planned by Network Rail and should have been completed this year.
But a Network Rail spokesman said: "Unfortunately, we have encountered some setbacks which mean that we've had to re-plan some of the work scheduled to take place this November.
"Working with the Welsh Government and industry partners, we are currently reviewing different options for the final delivery of this project.
"As this process continues, we will continue to update passengers, local residents and elected representatives."
The delays have drawn criticism from the Welsh Government, which commissioned the scheme in 2013.
A Welsh Government spokesman said: "These delays are a matter for Network Rail.
"We believe it is unacceptable that this project is facing further delays and the Minister has written to Network Rail requesting urgent action on this matter."
Work is being carried out on the line between Wrexham and Chester, doubling the line between Rossett Junction and Saltney Junction to help speed up travel times between North Wales and Cardiff.
Level crossings at Green Lane near Saltney and at Balderton, Pulford and Broad-Oak near Rossett are also being upgraded as part of the project.
North Wales AM Aled Roberts, who is a member of the Welsh Government Rail Group, said:
"There now appears to be major problems and delays with the scheme and the Welsh Government and Network Rail need to say what the problems are. What is being done? How it will affect the scheme? And when it is now going to be completed?"
