Mytton Bridge near Shrewsbury will be closed from May 5.

The bridge carries Mytton Lane over the River Perry at Mytton on the outskirts of Atcham.

The work will involve anchoring of the south east wing wall which is leaning heavily, repairs to the south parapet, and repairs to both abutments. These repairs are considered essential to ensure the long term future of the bridge.

The bridge will be closed to traffic while the work is being carried out as it is too narrow for the work to be undertaken safely with the bridge open to traffic.

While the road is closed, traffic will be diverted via Fitz but access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available throughout the work.

Meanwhile one of Shrewsbury's busiest roads has closed for two weeks while gas mains are renewed.

New Street, off Frankwell roundabout in the heart of the town, closed yesterday and will remain shut until April 27.

Traffic is banned fromusing the road east of the Boat House pub to the junction with Copthorne Road but will be able to enter and leave the town via Copthorne Road, Roman Road and Porthill.
