Telford factory worker awarded four-figure sum over reaction to chemicals

A factory worker from Telford has won an undisclosed four-figure compensation settlement after he contracted a "painful" skin condition from being exposed to chemicals while at work.

Graham Taylor had to give up swimming and golf for three months after contracting occupational dermatitis as a result of his work at Mahle Filter Systems in Halesfield, Telford.

The machine operator's job involved him welding components and dipping seals in solution as part of his day-to-day activities.

But his union Unite argued Mahle bosses had failed to provide the 62-year-old with the correct gloves to protect his skin from the potentially harmful P80 solution.

When he contracted the skin disease Mr Taylor got in touch with Unite's legal services team, who with the help of Thompsons Solicitors pursued a claim for compensation on his behalf.

Mahle Filter Systems have now changed their procedures so that staff are now adequately protected when dealing with hazardous chemicals.
