Glenda Anita Crump, of Hanwood, near Shrewsbury, was killed in the crash involving her green Citroen Picasso on the B5061 at Uckington.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses told the inquest of the rescue of her injured 10-year-old grandson from the car as it caught fire.

Terrence Hill, a delivery driver, described how 61-year-old Ms Crump and another car overtook on a straight just before the bend where her car left the road near the Horseshoes pub.

As he slowed and turned off for the Horseshoes where he was making a delivery, he saw the back of Ms Crump's car go though the trees off the road.

He said the boy was crying for help and a passer-by put out the fire with a foam extinguisher before the emergency services took over.

Graham Powell, a West Mercia Police collision investigator, said there was no alcohol or mobile phone use which contributed to the crash on June 21.

He said there were no brake marks on the road or in the field off the road heading towards the ditch and that the car had headed in a straight line and did not look to have negotiated the bend.

He said he suspected it was a medical episode, although nothing in the post mortem suggested that it was.

He said Mrs Crump had a range of medical issues and had been suffering blackouts – although said there was no definitive cause for the car leaving the road.

Coroner Mr John Ellery said Ms Crump, of Oak Road, died due to a road traffic collision. He said: "There are four possibilities. One a medical episode, two driver error, three reaction to road rage, or something else.

"Unfortunately for some reason she was negotiating that bend and lost control and was declared dead at the scene.

"The pathologist's cause of death is multiple injuries cause by road traffic collision."
