The 1st Shifnal Scouts and Guides has staged a range of activities to repair the roof of the building in Curriers Lane and has so far raised £6,000. But they still needed to raise another £15,000, and turned to Shifnal Town Council for help.

Last night councillors unanimously agreed to give the group a £12,000 grant – meaning work can begin next month.

Michelle Gough, group scout leader, cheered when councillors made their decision during their meeting in the town's Old Fire Station in Shrewsbury Road.

Councillor Richard Choudhary told members that the scout and guide movement "changes children's lives".

"I feel that we should support them," he added.
