Discarded cigarette may have caused M54 embankment fire
Firefighters were called to an embankment fire along the M54 near Shifnal which may have been caused by a cigarette thrown from a car.
The blaze was spotted between junction three and four yesterday. Appliances from Albrighton, Telford and Tweedale arrived at 6pm.
The fire service said the blaze, which measured about 55 square metres, was caused by burning rubbish discarded from a car. The fire was brought under control just after 6.15pm.
Aaron Holloway, crew manager at Telford Fire Station, said it is believed the fire was started by some kind of smoking material, possibly a cigarette.
He said: "We would advise people to dispose of any such material correctly in the vehicle and not throw it out, particularly because of the dry weather we are experiencing at the moment.
"The traffic was slowed while we dealt with the fire."
