Lord Hill's Column

For months the Lord Hill column has been shrouded in scaffolding and plastic sheeting.

But now, after a painstaking few weeks, the scaffolding, which had been supplied by local firm Jarvis Scaffolding, has been removed and the column commemorating Shrewsbury's most famous naval commander now awaits further work to replace or restore the statue of the man himself.

The scaffolding was erected around the column, which stands outside the town's Shirehall, as part of moves to prevent debris falling from Lord Hill's statue on to passers-by while remedial work was carried out.

Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill, served in the Napoleonic Wars as a trusted brigade, division and corps commander under the command of the Duke of Wellington. He became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in 1828.
