Shrewsbury road safety work is welcomed

Business owners have welcomed a plan to slow traffic along two main roads into Shrewsbury, despite it bringing roadworks and delays over the busy summer months.

Work is under way to install traffic calming measures on Wyle Cop, while Beeches Lane, which runs from the bottom of the Cop into Town Walls, may be closed for up to three weeks for new paving and the creation of no-waiting areas.

Wyle Cop, which is to become a 20mph zone, will briefly close in early July during the final stages of the work.

Nick Harris, who runs The Cornhouse restaurant, said the traffic calming measures may improve the area.

"I have noticed that it's quieter now but we're still in the really early stages," he said. "I think it is a good thing in the long-run so we will just put up with it. There have been God knows how many accidents down here with traffic and bikes so if it calms things down it can only be positive."

Mike Jones, who owns Stan's Cycles in Wyle Cop is also hopeful that the area will become safer for his customers.

He said: "Most of our customers come here on their bikes so any safety that comes as a result of the work will be good for our customers."

Russell Preece, who is landlord of The Nags Head pub in Wyle Cop, said is confident the work will not affect trade. He said: "I did notice it was really noisy this morning and I suppose if you have a door open on a sunny day you might notice the difference.

"These things have got to be done though and we won't be seriously affected by it.

Work began on the traffic management system yesterday, following consultation with both the residents and Shrewsbury Town Council.
