Baschurch homes plan opposite former railway station

Homes and business units could be built in former railway sidings in Baschurch under new plans.

The proposals have been put forward on land opposite Baschurch's former railway station, which includes the old sidings and the now closed Boreatton Arms pub.

An outline planning application for the development on the former Shropshire Stone And Granite Yard on Station Road has been submitted to Shropshire Council, but it is not stated how many homes and business units would be created.

Any future development could sit well alongside the railway station should it be reopened in the future, according to agents for the scheme. They say the pub building could be either demolished or converted as part of the project.

Campaigners have been fighting for several years to persuade Network Rail to re-open the village's station. They believe reopening it would be viable because of the significant growth in the area's population in the years since it closed and are currently undertaking a feasibility study.

But Network Rail has insisted it has no intention of re-opening the station at this time until it can be proven worthwhile.

A planning statement from agents Les Stephan Planning Ltd said the development, if it goes ahead, would complement any future reopening of the station.

The statement says: "It is suggested that this area could provide additional facilities to compliment the revival of the railway station.

"While the applicant has no control over the former Railway Station and its long-term future, he does support the communities' long-term goal to re-instate it to its former glory. In respect of this, as an adjoining landowner, his intention would be to co-operate in helping to achieve an asset for the community."
