Amber beaded necklaces could fetch £12,000 at Shropshire auction
Two beaded amber necklaces could fetch as much as £12,000 when they go under the hammer tomorrow.
One of the necklaces, which have been put up for auction with Shrewsbury-based fine art auctioneers Halls by a seller based in the south east of England, has larger beads than a necklace that sold last month for a whopping £22,000 to a Chinese collector.
Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley, Halls' silver and jewellery specialist, has high hopes that the necklaces will also attract international interest.
The second necklace, which is valued at £4,000 to £6,000, has 69 smaller sized beads, the majority of which are flat disc shaped.
"Amber beads have always been seen as a status symbol," said Miss Lineker-Mobberley. "The larger the beads, the more powerful and rich the owner is deemed to be.
"Butterscotch amber, which has a milky, less translucent appearance, is now very much in vogue, having captured the eye in Asia and the Middle East. Due to the power of internet marketing, we can now reach buyers around the globe and they regularly visit Halls' auctions either in person or via telephone or online bidding.
"Following the excellent price and international interest generated by the amber necklace last month, we are anticipating a similar response to the auction tomorrow."
