Shropshire rail delays after man killed by train

A man has died after being struck by a train travelling to Shrewsbury today.

Full details of the incident, which happened at just after midday, are still being confirmed, but Lyndsey Preece, communications officer for London Midland, said: "We have received confirmation that a person was on the line.

"We received an alert at 12.25pm that it was the 13.05 Birmingham to Shrewsbury service that had struck a person in the Dudley Port area. I understand that British Transport Police are at the scene at the moment."

She added that services to Shropshire from the West Midlands had been affected but anyone whose journeys had been delayed or inconvenienced would be able to take alternative routes.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "BTP officers were called to the line near Dudley Port railway station after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

"Officers from BTP and West Midlands Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 1.19pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Medics from the West Midlands Ambulance Service also attended and the body of an as-yet-unidentified man was located. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to establish the man's identity and inform his next of kin.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner."
