Two arrests after cables stolen from Market Drayton builder's yard
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of stealing copper cables from a formers builder's yard in Shropshire.
A member of the public who owns a nearby field spotted the pair at Old Station Yard in Pipe Gate, near Market Drayton.
Police officers later arrested the men – aged 24 and 32 – on suspicion of theft and have granted them bail.
The incident happened between about 7pm and 9.20pm on Monday night.
Frank Woodcock, owner of the site, said: "I was sitting in the office where I live and I got a phone call from a guy who owns a field nearby who saw two men.
"He asked if I had got any blokes working at the yard. I said no and I would go and investigate. I then rang the police.
"The police arrived very quickly and apprehended them. Their response was amazing."
Mr Woodcock added: "I have owned the site since 1984 and there have been occasion's people have pinched things, including red diesel and go-karts.
"For the first 20 years it was very safe, but it has got worse since the Phoenix Rubber Factory closed."
Toby Shergold, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "The theft happened between 7pm and 9.20pm on Monday.
"Two offenders entered the site and removed a large quantity of copper cabling, which they dragged over to a field to the rear of the property.
"Two men, aged 24 and 32, were detained nearby. Both have been released on police bail pending further inquires.
"The 24-year-old was also arrested for possession of cannabis, a Class B controlled drug. He received a caution for that."
