Almost 200 homes in Shropshire were without water after a pipe connected to a reservoir burst.

Severn Trent Water said it was alerted to the problem yesterday when the reservoir at Knowbury, near Ludlow, started emptying.

The company drafted in workers who spent much of the day fixing the problem and getting customers reconnected. The pipe which supplies the reservoir burst, cutting off the supply to householders in the Ludlow area.

Severn Trent spokesman Gareth Mead said: "We had under 200 calls reporting a drop in pressure or a break in supply. The leak was plugged by 12noon but then the network had to refill as all the pipes and such were empty."

Plans to build the reservoir on former agricultural land were only approved in July last year.
